Neuro Linguistic Programing (NLP) was first formulated in the 1970s based on the work of Richard Bandler and John Grinder. After modeling Virginia Satir and Fritz Perls, they formulated the "Meta Model", which forms a serious of questions to retrieve the deleted, distorted and generalized information in every day communication. That was the first breakthrough in communication, and is recorded in the book "The Structure of Magic I".

After the publication of this book, which was Richard's thesis, Gregory Bateson, a wold famous anthropologist, introduced the pair to Milton H. Erickson M.D. Milton is known as the father of modern day hypnotherapy, and is the founder of the American Council for Clinical Hypnotherapy. Offering a completely different approach to problem solving, they modeled his strategies for working with clients and achieving incredible results in short periods of time. Among many other things, the famous "Milton Model" was conceived through their modeling work.

Thereafter, they kept developing on the ideas of Erickson, Perls and Satir and gave birth to a whole host of techniques: Submodality work, Swish Patterns, Time Line, Advanced Language Patterns, etc.

Others have also joined in developing the ideas put forth by John and Richard even further, among them Robert Dilts, Tad James, Leslie Cameron-Bandler, Judith DeLozier, and most recently John Overdurf and Julie Silverthorne.
